Convert a spreadsheet table to Markdown.

Copy an Excel or Google Sheets table into Markdown for a README or document. Select TSV input, preserve identifiers and check the rendered result.

Copy a rectangular range, including its headings

Select the cells you want in Excel or Google Sheets and copy them. Include a first row containing the column names: Markdown output uses that row as its header. Avoid merged cells and make sure each row has the same number of columns.

Copying cells normally puts tabs between columns and line breaks between rows. That is TSV, even if the spreadsheet was originally opened from a CSV file. A comma inside a cell is ordinary text in TSV, so it does not become an extra column.

Example input

Product	Code	Status
Notebook	00123	In stock
Pen, blue	00456	On order

Select TSV input and Markdown output

Open the table converter, select TSV as input and Markdown as output, then paste the copied cells and convert. Use the cell preview to confirm that Product, Code and Status are separate columns. If everything appears in one column, check the selected input format.

If you are pasting raw comma-separated file contents rather than copied spreadsheet cells, choose CSV instead. Select the input format to match what you pasted, not the file extension of the original document.

Example result

| Product | Code | Status |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Notebook | 00123 | In stock |
| Pen, blue | 00456 | On order |

Paste into your document and preview it

Copy the output into your README or Markdown editor, leaving a blank line before the table. Preview it in the destination application. Pipe tables work in GitHub-flavoured Markdown, but not every Markdown renderer supports the same extensions.

The code 00123 remains text in this conversion. If your spreadsheet already removed its leading zeros, correct the source data first. Formatting a number to display zeros is not the same as ensuring every export preserves the identifier.

Know what does not transfer

The converter handles cell text, not spreadsheet layout. Colours, merged cells and formula logic do not transfer; copied formula results may appear as values. Markdown output represents cell line breaks as <br>, which some renderers handle differently. Review cells containing pipes, links or other Markdown punctuation in the final preview.

Markdown is useful for a readable document table, but is not a lossless storage format. Keep the original spreadsheet or CSV when another person needs to edit or import the data.

Choose CSV or JSON when the destination needs data

For a spreadsheet import, choose CSV or TSV output. For JSON, Toolpane produces arrays of rows containing text cells, including the header row when supplied. It does not infer numeric types or produce an object per row.

Example result

[["Product","Code","Status"],["Notebook","00123","In stock"],["Pen, blue","00456","On order"]]

Check one column before publishing

If you need to check whether the table includes every expected code, copy its Code column and compare it with your reference using Compare two lists. The missing-items guide explains how to interpret each result. For a single comma-separated column instead of a full table, use the comma separator.
